Ceramic coating for cars: what to really expect
A ceramic coating won't protect your paint from stone chips, and it won't do your washing for you. So what does it actually do, how long does it last and who is it for?

A ceramic coating is one of the most popular ways to protect your paint for the long term. But it often comes with the idea that you apply it once and the car will look new for years without any further care.
Unfortunately, that's not how it works.
What a ceramic coating does
A ceramic coating creates a very thin protective layer on the surface of the paint. That layer:
- protects the paint from everyday dirt and chemical exposure,
- makes washing easier, because its hydrophobic properties repel water and dirt,
- adds gloss and depth – a lot of it on well-prepared paint.
But a ceramic coating is not physical protection against stone chips or deeper scratches. If you want to protect your paint from mechanical damage, that's mainly what paint protection film (PPF) is for.
A ceramic coating doesn't mean a maintenance-free car
This is probably the most important thing to know before you have a coating applied.
A ceramic coating doesn't work in a way where the studio applies it and you don't have to look after the paint for the next three years.
Quite the opposite. To keep its properties and last as long as possible, the car needs to be washed regularly and properly.
A gentle hand wash with suitable car care products is ideal. Brush car washes or poor hand-washing technique can gradually damage not only the coating itself, but above all the paint underneath. More on that in how often to wash your car and how to do it right.
Regular maintenance matters
Over time, minerals, road grime, tar, iron fallout and other contamination build up on the surface of the car.
Because of them, the coating can gradually lose its hydrophobic properties, and owners then often feel that it has stopped working.
In many cases, though, the protection isn't gone. The surface just needs proper cleaning and decontamination.
That's why it makes sense to have the coating checked regularly and maintained as needed.
How long does a ceramic coating last?
Manufacturers offer coatings with different claimed lifespans, from a few months to several years.
The real lifespan always depends on how the car is used, how many kilometers it covers, how it's washed and parked, and how it's maintained.
So it's better to treat the stated lifespan as a rough guide, not as a guarantee that the protection will keep working the whole time without any care.
Who a ceramic coating makes sense for
A ceramic coating is a good choice if you want to protect your paint for the long term, make it easier to maintain and keep your car looking good.
But it makes the most sense when the owner is willing to keep looking after the car properly.
A ceramic coating doesn't replace caring for your car. But it makes the right care a lot easier.

The next stage of Detailero: developing the apps and reaching new customers
The past few weeks at Detailero were mostly about developing and fine-tuning the apps. Over the coming months, that work will be followed by a stronger focus on marketing, aimed at both studios and car owners. We want to use the winter to develop the platform further and to support interest in the services of the studios on board.

How often should you wash your car, and how do you do it right?
You can wash your car every week and still slowly ruin the paint. Technique is what counts, and some kinds of dirt shouldn't wait until the next wash.

How to choose the right car detailing studio
Detailing studios differ in what they specialize in, not just in where they are. Here's how to find one that does exactly the job you need.
